Training - Maybe the most important thing you will ever buy.

As well as potentially saving life and limb, good chainsaw training will also increase efficiency in time, energy and money.

Investing in proper training is essential and we have put this brief article together to give you an outline of the different qualifications that can be achieved, with the right training package.

The UK Health and Safety Executive says that " By law, chainsaw operators must have received adequate training relevant to the type of work they undertake",  and notes the two main awarding bodies for the UK: City and Guilds NPTC and Lantra Awards.

These two non-profit organisations offer various different certificates for chainsaw users, foresters and arborists; which can be achieved following an assessment by one of their approved assessors.

There are two parts to the process:

1) Training. It is important to note here that while the training for these certificates can be undertaken by anyone, the final certification can only be granted by an approved assessor.

It therefore makes sense to choose a well respected training provider, who will train you to the industry accepted safety standards using current best practices. Some of the companies offering training, are also qualified to asses and certify at the end of the course

2)Assessment. Assessment and award of certificate can only be undertaken by approved assessors, and while some approved assessors also offer training as part of their service, there are some courses which particularly state that the  assessor is not allowed to be the same person who carried out the  training.

There are many, many Qualifications offered by City and Guilds NPTC and Lantra Awards:the tables below show those that are related to Forestry, Arboriculture and Chainsaw Use.

Table 1 & 2: City & Guilds NPTC courses. The following courses are available from City and Guilds NPTC.

    • Some of the courses are combinations of two or more other courses (for instance 002003 is a combination of 02001 & 02002).
    • Some of the courses require that you are assessed and trained by two different people.
